From the foot of the Ballons des Vosges to the Alsatian Jura, the Land of Christmas Carols and Fabrics is in southern Alsace, just across the border from Germany (Freiburg) and Switzerland (Basel). The heritage of the textile industry is cultivated and magnificently staged in various museums: the Musée de l’Impression sur Etoffes -Printed Fabric Museum (MISE) in Mulhouse, and Wesserling Park – Textile Museum. Every Christmas, an original fabric – inspired by old patterns stored at the MISE – is printed in local factories. Thousands of metres of fabrics thus decorate the Christmas Markets and monuments and are featured on small objects and gifts that can be brought back as souvenirs.
The local Tourist Offices have prepared an original way to discover textiles, organising a “Fabric Workshop” held in the towns of the Land of Carols and Fabrics running from late November to early January. Various traditional techniques will be presented and you are invited to “get close to the material” by producing your own “work”…
Every year, a range of by-products is designed and locally made to let you savour the magical atmosphere of an Alsace Christmas in your own home! Tablecloths, napkins, small tree decorations are available in all local Tourist Offices.
And, of course, you will find carol-singing vigils and Advent concerts in Mulhouse, Thann and Saint Louis and the essential Christmas Markets with, in particular, the Mulhouse market on the Place de la Réunion from 22.11 to 30.12 and the Printed Fabric Museum’s market… but also, the Enchanted Forest in Altkirch, the Advent Windows in Uffholtz, Christmas Windows at Soultz and countless other events !
